Rock keyboard sheet music. Helpful tips

(adapted from excerpt from "SA Contemporary Trends in Music Education Journal" . Edition 97 Article Guide for reading sheet music on the keyboards Copyrighted in USA 2001. A hard copy journal published by Ezmusic4u Partners - SA Music Education Press)

Rock sheet music is actually of all the genres ( Styles of music) the most logical.most repetitive and one of the easiest styles in which to learn to read sheet music. Rock also becomes even easier if you anticipate what to expect as you read each phrase in the sheet music, so lets find out what to look for.

SIMILAR PHRASES or RIFFS in ROCK MUSIC ( in rock music a phrases is usally called a riff ) The first thing we work from are the phrases or rock riffs in the sheet music. All types of music include phrases but rock music generally includes more similar riffs than most. This is because rock relies more on moving the SAME or VERY SIMILAR riffs in the music UP or DOWN than constantly changing the melodies of each riff.

In fact we can even anticipate in 50% or so in rock music exactly where the next notes in the sheet music will appear before even reading it. Thats because the melody gets moved mostly between the chords of C7, F7 and G7.

TRICK TIP 1: Go through the sheet music you can download above and notice that each rock riff in the sheet music is actually mostly the same rhythm and even sounds the same but is only higher or lower than the previous phrases.

TRICK TIP 2: Not only does each rock riff in the sheet music "sound " similar but, especially on the keyboard or piano even the rock finger patterns are going to be similar . So by learning the first phrase well, you will find each phrase fingering is mostly the same. So you dont have to be daunted by learning the whole page of rock sheet music, thinking each phrase is a little mountain to climb by itself .Its just mostly repetition of one or two rock music riffs.
