essential ways to play especially on more advanced HANDCUT headjoints ( advanced heads producing better sounds have less room for error and misdirected air so they feel harder to play when not played right )
But on ANY flute headjoint this can only help too
1) the flute lipplate should be FIRMLY against your lower jaw to prevent the slightest movement in or out or up and down
To do this the index finger left hand presses FIRMLY against the body of the flute towards your lip
The flute chimney about 1/3 covered ( look in a mirror )
2) Always breath from the BOTTOM of your lungs
If your stomach moves OUT when you breath IN your'e breathing correctly
3) When breathing out your rounded ( not smiling shape ) lip position - more like a POUT and and "00" or OH shape ( each produces different sounds ) should be TIGHTLY TOGETHER BEFORE HAVING THE FLUTE to your lips
Not tight as in tight but tight as in no air escaping ( about half the pressure of very tight )
The use your DIAPHRAGM to force the air out thus opening the lips ever so slightly by the force of the air alone - NOT opening the lips by any noticeable muscles movement
NOW your airstream is now going to wander all over the flute head chimney hole and less breathy sound will occur but not only that youll be using half the air for the same volume as sound as you were before
