How to place your fingers on the keyboard

    Keyboard and Piano Fingering Lesson 1

  • The keys are simpler to play when your fingers on the keyboard DONT STRETCH.
  • NOT STRETCHING applies to 90% of how you should use your fingers (especially right hand parts) so we advise you leave that to Contortionist Jasmine George Perfoming in Circus

Keyboard and Piano Fingering Lesson 1 Step 1

With your fingers 1 and 2 for D and E in the diagram 5 finger positions d e f g a piano and keyboard Notice that :

  • The thumb is ALWAYS called finger 1. The index (pointing finger) is ALWAYS called finger 2 in all sheet music on keyboards.
  • Sheet music often marks in which fingers to play with numbers like this :
  • For BEGINNERS wev'e found a way that will both help you read normal sheet music but also makes sure your hand is correctly positioned from the beginning even in advanced beginner keyboard pieces ! so.........lets try it out !

Please now place fingers 1 and 2 on your keyboard here 5 finger positions and staff notes d e f g a piano and keyboard

  • Notice that fingers 1 and 2 DID NOT STRETCH OVER ANY KEY on your keyboard and just as fingers 1 and 2 are side by side they also played the 2 white notes that are side by side !

With your fingers 2 and 3 for E and F in the diagram..5 finger positions fingers middle and index d e f g a piano and keyboard here

(( finger 3 is ALWAYS your middle finger ( in either hand) in ALL sheet music ))

Please now place fingers 2 and 3 on your keyboard here fingers index and middle piano or keyboard

  • Once again notice that fingers 2 and 3 DID NOT STRETCH OVER ANY KEY on your keyboard but just as fingers 2 and 3 are side by side they also played the 2 white notes on the keyboard that are side by side !

With your fingers 3 and 4 for F and G in the diagram 5 finger positions fingers middle and 4th d e f g a piano and keyboard here

Please now place fingers 3 and 4 on your keyboard here fingers i4th and middle piano or keyboard

  • Once again notice that fingers 3 and 4 DID NOT STRETCH OVER ANY KEY on your keyboard but just as fingers 2 and 3 are side by side they also played the 2 white notes that are side by side !

With your fingers 4 and 5 for G and A in the diagram here

Please now place fingers 4 and 5 on your keyboard here fingers i4th and 5th piano or keyboard

  • Once again notice that fingers 4 and 5 DID NOT STRETCH OVER ANY KEY on your keyboard but just as fingers 2 and 3 are side by side they also played the 2 white notes that are side by side !

Great ! now your fingers are are wiggling around feeling a lot more confident ! Lets see in LESSON 2 how by simply moving the WHOLE hand :

  • The basic finger positions of LESSON 1 remain the same no matter HOW FAR UP and DOWN the keyboard the notes and keys are in ANY piece of music !

  • Place your 5 fingers on the red notes

Then lift your fingers to where

in the same music the diagram might change to this

  • So your hand moved across to the right , each finger moving to the right by one white key.

Lift your fingers now to later in the same music where the diagram might change to this

So rather than stretch your fingers to the right , you moved your WHOLE hand across to the right

will help you play with fingers relatively relaxed and close together like this for about 90 % of the time,

 

NOT like this (until youre good and can do BOTH ! But doing that from the beginning means you will never learn economised relaxed playing and also you'll always be endlessly confused about which fingers to use where! )
